Face & Body Scar Revision

Although there is no way to completely remove a scar from the body, there are different modalities that can be utilised to help reduce and improve the appearance of scars. Scarring is a normal part of the body’s healing process after an injury that extends into the dermis layer of the skin. The way a scar heals can be influenced by various factors such as skin type, genetics, the location and size of the wound, tension on the healing site, secondary infection, foreign material, and hormonal status. Here at Bimini, we use different modalities dependent on the specific client and their concerns.

Types of Scars

Non-surgical scar revision can help to reduce and improve the appearance of:

  • Normotrophic Scars (STRETCH MARKS) : Normotrophic scars form level to the surface of the skin and with time assume a whitish colour. They can be associated with a dermal injury or the stretching of the dermis.
  • Hypertrophic Scars : Hypertrophic scars are raised red scars that eventually become paler over several years. Hypertrophic scars lie above the surface of the skin but do not go beyond the boundary of the original injury.
  • Ice Pick Scars : Ice pick scars form as a result of the acne healing process. They are the deepest type of atrophic scarring and are usually less than 2mm wide.
  • Rolling Scars : rolling scars can be of varying depths and have sloping edges. They are wider than ice pick scars and typically wider than boxcar scars, Rolling scars are commonly formed in thick skin areas such as the lower cheeks and jawline.
  • Boxcar Scars : boxcar scars are round or oval-shaped depressions that typically have sharp vertical edges. They are between 1-4mm wide meaning they are generally wider than ice pick scars but not as wide as rolling scars.
  • Atrophic Scars : Atrophic scars form below the surface of the skin and appear indented. They are characterized by the body’s inability to regenerate tissue after an injury to the dermis. Atrophic scars can result from acne, chickenpox or having a lesion removed.
  • Moreover, scars can also be categorised based on colour and physical characteristics. They may be skin coloured, hypo pigmented (white), or hyper pigmented (brown). Raised scars can either be Hypertrophic when they are enlarged but confined to the original area of trauma, or Keloid when the scarring extends beyond the original area of trauma.

Preventive Measures and Early Intervention:

At Bimini, we believe in taking proactive measures to treat surgical scars to prevent them from becoming larger. For instance, after general surgical procedures, we start treatment as soon as stitches are removed. After procedures performed by a plastic surgeon, we wait until post-operative clearance is given, which is usually about 6 weeks after surgery.
